Around ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can be one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Today, I can assertively state that I’ve made some wonderful friends here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a chance at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was juggling the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can test your confidence; you may see others studying and feel less capable. What helped me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you find something unclear, there’s a good chance others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Seek help from fellow students and staff!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep a steady line of communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t completely take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment amidst the stress of exams and deadlines.
