By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging in something unfamiliar was uncharacteristic for my formerly reserved self. Looking back on the last academic year, I recognize a timeframe rich with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be quite daunting when commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On the initial day of moving into my new accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I remained in my room the entire day, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what lesson have I learned? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will arise to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also realized that authenticity is vital. With such a wide range of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels and an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What benefited me was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same circumstances. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same boat. So, don’t hesitate to request assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Seek support from both peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to excel and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I only utilized the pastoral support at the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
Ultimately, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are frequently misplaced and can be eased through support from staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never solitary and has taught me to take pleasure in my experiences despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
