Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was far from what my previously shy and introverted nature was accustomed to. Looking back now, I realize I experienced a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often regarded as one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, here at this institution and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that taking the initiative at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another obstacle encountered was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, the transition from the first term to the second was even greater. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be taxing on your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less competent. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost guarantee that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the most crucial lesson to absorb during your first year. Reach out to your peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary insight from this segment of university life is to fully utilize the assistance that is available to you. You can never receive too much!
Overall, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support avenues available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has shown me how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
