Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, fearful, and unsure about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously shy and quiet self was used to. Reflecting on the year, I see a journey rich in personal development, obstacles, and a lot of joy! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may represent one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room because I felt too nervous to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, however, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I have established a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversation with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I realize? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. There is a wide array of individuals across the program and university; you will inevitably find peers like you.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always simple for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who also don’t grasp it. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned taking risks – at the beginning of the year, I took one by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most worthwhile actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support that’s available to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are almost always unwarranted and can be eased by the plethora of support options offered by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated, and it’s also taught me how to find enjoyment in the face of stressors like exams and deadlines.
