Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about the road ahead. I was on the verge of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Taking such a significant step was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a notable worry for you. On my moving day into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I remained cooped up in my room all day, too shy to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all sparked by casual conversations with others who were in similar predicaments. So, what did I conclude? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to facilitate your interactions with others. Also, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of content. There was a clear transition from A-levels and an even more significant leap between the first and second terms. Being in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might feel less capable compared to your peers. What aided me was recalling that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a topic, it’s likely others are too. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek help. This could be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to fellow students and instructors!

The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I did so by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and enhancing those connections is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key insight is to utilize the support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much assistance!

In summation, this year has shown me that apprehensions about university are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support from both staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never on my own and learned to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
