By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I geared up to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not typical for my previously reserved self. Looking back on the past academic year, I see a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and fun. What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently a major concern for newcomers to university. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and socialize. Now, I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, merely by participating in casual conversations with others in comparable situations. The essential takeaway? Take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t prepared, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker activities will facilitate connections with others. Be authentic; with such a diverse group at the university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with you.

Another challenge involved handling the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a stark increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. This environment can be challenging for your self-esteem, especially while measuring yourself against peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, others likely find it confusing too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This is essential in your first year—request support from both classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are amazing. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They keep open lines of communication regarding our issues. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had leveraged it sooner. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with faculty—a worthwhile experience. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the finest actions you can take for your own benefit. Make the most of the available support; there’s always room for more!

This year has revealed to me that pre-university apprehensions are frequently baseless and can be alleviated by the assistance available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized I’m never alone and how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
