Now ten months removed, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. As a first-year student, I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I realize it was a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons have I gathered this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks amongst the more daunting facets of starting university, and for any prospective student reading this, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room out of fear of stepping outside and introducing myself. Yet, reflecting today, I can assert with confidence that I have forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, both here at this university and within this course. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in like circumstances. So, what wisdom have I gained? I learned that taking a leap at the year’s onset is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events to break the ice and engage with others. Additionally, I learned that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. Among the diverse individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find kindred spirits.

The workload and the complexity of content posed another challenge. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can impact your confidence; you might notice others studying and start to feel like you don’t measure up. A few strategies helped me overcome that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that there are others who feel the same. Therefore, ask for assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the instructors!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication about our challenges throughout the year. While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and this is unquestionably one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available to you. There is no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment in the midst of stressors like exams and deadlines.
