Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Twelve months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Reflecting back, I view a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first hurdles was forging friendships, a challenging part of commencing university. If you’re an incoming student, this could be a major worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to interact with new people. Now, I can proudly announce that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all through initiating casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. So, what did I learn? It’s important to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready, that’s okay! There will be ice-breaker activities to assist you in making connections with others. Also, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse crowd, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even more significant one from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you might feel less capable compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is navigating similar experiences. If something isn’t clear to you, it likely isn’t clear to others as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is pivotal to grasp in your first year. Reach out to fellow students and educators!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and understand the challenges faced by students. They show empathy and maintain dialogue regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which helped me bond with the faculty, a beneficial opportunity. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to seize the support available. You can never have too much help!

This year has enlightened me that apprehensive sentiments regarding university are frequently baseless and can be eased with the aid accessible from staff and peers. It has revealed that I’m never solitary and how to have fun even amidst the pressures from exams and deadlines.
