Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most terrifying elements of starting at university, and if you are a prospective student, it might be one of your foremost concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the semester’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Nevertheless, today, I can proudly claim that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with brief conversations with peers facing similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a bold step at the start of the year is crucial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker occasions and events will facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are bound to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me through that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to embrace in the first year. Seek support from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking the plunge – I took one at the onset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is profoundly beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest actions you can take for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the available assistance. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the numerous support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
