Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the early and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my housing, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day locked away in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet new people. Today, I can proudly declare I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I come to understand? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There are plenty of ice-breaking events arranged to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and the university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge I faced was managing the workload and difficulty of the content. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to learn in the first year. Look for help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and this is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to take full advantage of the support available. You can never have too much help!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are typically baseless and can be diminished with the support from staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
