Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Embracing the unfamiliar wasn’t exactly something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my inaugural day of moving into my residence, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to step out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, initiated by casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that making the first move at the beginning of the year is always a good idea. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and occasions designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals within the program and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a significant increase from A-levels, and in some instances, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the educators!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They show understanding and keep consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make the most of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous moves you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to fully utilize the assistance available. One can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that anxious emotions, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
