In October 2022, ten months ago, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown wasn’t something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I now recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to venture out and socialize. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I take away from this? At the onset of the year, it’s beneficial to take that leap. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you engage with others. I also realized that authenticity is crucial. With so many diverse individuals in the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another difficulty was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a clear progression from A-levels, and an even steeper increase from the first term to the second. Being in such a competitive environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re unsure about something, others likely are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This is arguably the most vital lesson I learned in my first year. Reach out for help from colleagues and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion and maintain open lines of communication regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year was nearly over, and I regret not doing so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and throughout university life, are often baseless and can be soothed through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never truly alone and taught me how to have fun in spite of pressures like exams and deadlines.
