By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. My previously timid and introverted self wasn’t accustomed to venturing into the unknown. Looking back, I notice a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re glancing at this as an incoming student, it might be one of your major worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Reflecting on it now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with a bit of casual conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what enlightenment did I gain? I realized that it’s always wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be plenty of ice-breaking situations and events to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that if you can be anything, be authentic. There are so many diverse individuals across the program and university; you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed into such an environment can sometimes hinder your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in navigating that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is in the same situation. If you are having trouble grasping something, I can virtually assure you there are others who share that struggle. So, seek assistance. This may be the most critical skill to develop in your first year. Reach out for support from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with learners and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps early on; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get to know faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this element of university is to capitalize on the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
