Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Daring to leap into the unknown was unfamiliar territory for my previously timid and reserved self. Reflecting upon this academic year, I see it filled with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be a major concern for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assuredly state that I’ve cultivated some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it merely took initiating small conversations with others in similar situations. So, what wisdom did I gain? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a bold step at the year’s outset. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, let it be your authentic self. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.
Another challenge was coping with the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a dynamic environment can sometimes undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares this experience. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that several others are also grappling with it. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to embrace during the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks at the beginning – I did take a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many paths to getting acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary insight from this part of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have too much!
On a broader scale, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unjustified and can be mitigated through the extensive support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
