Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the year, I realize it has been a period of personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more overwhelming aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be among your top concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s beginning, I spent the entire day secluded in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling somewhat unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to facilitate interaction with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. There’s an array of unique individuals within the course and the university; you’re certain to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I had to navigate was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling with a topic, I can nearly assure you that there are several others who are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show sympathy towards students and keep in regular contact with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I’d utilized it earlier. I initially mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is an incredibly beneficial experience. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your development! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the resources being offered. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated by the broad range of support available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has guided me on how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
