Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current state?
One of the very first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This aspect of commencing university is certainly one of the more daunting, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room due to my apprehension about meeting others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly declare that I’ve made some of the most remarkable friends here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean from this experience? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the outset of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, fear not! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with fellow students. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find others who resonate with you.
Another obstacle I needed to tackle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always straightforward for one’s confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle with something, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a handful of others who also do not comprehend it. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next topic. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students encounter difficulties. They resonate with our experiences and uphold consistent communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year wellness representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year has illuminated the truth that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
