Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart on me, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, this could be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet others. However, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that making bold moves at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and activities exist to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that feeling, one being the realization that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost guarantee that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Look for help from your classmates and the instructors!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They are empathetic towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned earlier the importance of taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your personal growth! My key lesson from this facet of university life is to leverage the support provided. You can never have access to too much aid!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources available from staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated to me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment in the midst of stressors like exams and deadlines.
