Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with individuals in the same boat. What did I learn? It’s wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events will be available to help you interact with others. Also, if you should embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another hurdle was the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that others are in the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Seek assistance from both peers and staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our worries. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly rewarding. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to make the most of the support provided. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are typically unfounded and can be eased through the support available from staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never alone and has taught me to embrace enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
