Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxieties, fears, and uncertainties about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved personality was used to. Reflecting on it now, I recognize an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, far too daunted to go out and introduce myself to anyone. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I figured out that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will arise to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that, above all, being yourself is essential. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like yourself.
Another challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me during that struggle, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally puzzled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support being provided. You can never have too much!
In a broader sense, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the multitude of support services available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
