Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of fun! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you’re contemplating this path, it might be a significant concern for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s essential to take a chance at the year’s outset. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are ample opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be authenticity. With a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re likely to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the demands of the coursework and its complexity. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can take a toll on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggle. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can nearly assure you there are others who also do. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson learned in the freshman year. Reach out to peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The instructors in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication year-round about our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking risks previously – I took one at the beginning of the academic year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow learners. It has shown me that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
