Authored by Dawson La, Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I got ready to commence my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something I was familiar with, given my previously reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most challenging parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before classes started, I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to go out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships in university and my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with peers in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? Taking risks at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There are many ice-breaker events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse community in the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another hurdle I faced was the heavy workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct transition from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel inferior compared to your peers. Several factors aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate during your freshman year. Seek support from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep an open line of communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. As I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to make full use of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that the anxiety surrounding university is often misplaced and can be eased with the help provided by staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
