Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges I confronted was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most rewarding friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I learned that making the first move at the beginning of the year is always the best choice. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities and events tailored to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find others like yourself.
An additional obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are at least a few others who are equally baffled. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to acquire in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask your classmates and the faculty for help!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep us updated throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I indeed took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to meet staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the resources available to you. You can never have an excess of support!
On a broader note, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are typically unwarranted and can be alleviated by the multitude of support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has also taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stresses such as exams and deadlines.
