By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. As a first-year student, I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self had experience with. Looking back now, I realize that the year was filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university can be particularly daunting, and if you’re reading this as an upcoming student, it might be among your top worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with people in the same circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in networking with others. I also learned that the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your vibes.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. The jump from A-levels was certainly noticeable, and in some respects, the transition from the first term to the second was even greater. Being immersed in such an environment can be quite challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less competent. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you’re having trouble understanding something, I can almost assure you that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students experience difficulties. They connect with students and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role helped me build relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My major takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I’m never truly alone, and it has demonstrated how to have fun alongside the stressors such as exams and deadlines.
