Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodations, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Today, I can say with assurance that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this institution and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in similar positions. So, what did I discover? It’s advantageous to take that initial leap at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and the university, you are bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can put your confidence to the test; you might observe your peers studying and feel incompetent. What supported me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle with something, it’s likely that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the academic year, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased by the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and have learned how to enjoy myself despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
