By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
In October 2022, ten months ago, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I realize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights did I gain, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it might be a significant worry. On the day I moved into my new residence, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I remained in my room all day, too fearful to venture out and meet people. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a broad array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.
A further challenge was the demands of the workload and complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a competitive environment can have a toll on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you are struggling to comprehend something, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty for help!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They show compassion for our situations and keep an open line of communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until near the end of the year, yet I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Earlier, I mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a student well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has illuminated the fact that I am never alone and has shown me how to find joy even amid pressures like examinations and deadlines.
