Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainties regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and restrained self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, several days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can assure you that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

A further challenge was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such an atmosphere can impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee others are in the same boat. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This can be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek support from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing dialogue throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to maximize the assistance available. You can never have an excess of help!

In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the various support systems accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment while managing the pressures such as exams and deadlines.
