Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I got ready to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was a new experience for my typically reserved self. Looking back at the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks among the most daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I remained entirely in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and socialize. Now, I can proudly state that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships during my time at university and in my program. I discovered a second family at Imperial, all starting with simple conversations with others facing similar experiences. What have I discovered? It’s essential to take that initial step at the onset of the year. If you’re apprehensive or unsure, that’s perfectly okay! Numerous ice-breaker activities will be available to facilitate connections with others. Furthermore, be authentic. With an array of diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to find like-minded peers.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of content. There was a stark transition from A-levels, and an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you may question your abilities compared to your peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone shares similar feelings. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, chances are there are others who feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most important lesson from my first year. Reach out for assistance from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge the challenges that students encounter. They are understanding and keep us informed about our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for your well-being! My key takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that apprehensions about university are frequently unwarranted and can be eased through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
