Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights did this year present, and how do I feel now?

One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an aspiring student, it may be your primary concern. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I isolated myself in my room all day, too daunted to step out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve forged some incredible friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with fellow students in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not yet ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that being authentic is essential. With such a wide array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge I faced was the amount of work and the difficulty of the content. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even bigger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can be daunting for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are experiencing the same confusion. Therefore, ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek guidance from peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students face. They relate to students and uphold ongoing communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had recognized its value earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this element of university is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
