Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your largest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term commencing, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and introduce myself. However, today, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all by striking up casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I learn? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events available to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there is one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter kindred spirits.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly an increase from A-levels, and in some ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be hard on your self-esteem; you may see your peers studying and feel less competent. Several things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you find something puzzling, I can almost assure you others do as well. Therefore, ask for assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from both your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to our experiences and keep in consistent contact throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the opportunities for assistance. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the multiple support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never truly alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
