Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling apprehensive, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more frightening facets of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be among your greatest concerns. On the day I moved into my residence, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too intimidated to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family here at Imperial, and it all started with engaging in small conversations with peers who were experiencing similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you aren’t feeling fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and activities designed to facilitate interaction with others. I also realized that if there is one thing to be, it’s yourself. With the diversity of individuals throughout the course and university; you are bound to connect with like-minded people.

Another significant challenge I had to navigate was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was notable, and in some ways, there was an even more substantial shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me through that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone finds themselves in the same predicament. If you are struggling to grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a handful of others who are equally stumped. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb during your first year. Reach out for help from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is an extremely beneficial thing to do. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, whether prior to or during university, are generally unfounded and can be alleviated by the wide range of support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and how to embrace enjoyment alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
