Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships here, at this institution and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I understood that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a variety of people throughout the program and university, you’re sure to meet like-minded folks.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a transition from A-levels, and in several ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A couple of things supported me through this ordeal, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others are in the same situation. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb during your first year. Ask for help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and ensure consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are various ways to build relationships with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have an excess!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have a good time despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
