A decade ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unknown was not what my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was fostering friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student, this may be your chief worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Now, I can say with assurance that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever encountered here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all initiated with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I absorb? It’s best to take a bold step at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, fret not! There are numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you bond with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is vital. With so many varied individuals throughout the course and university, you’re guaranteed to find like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can influence your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, others most likely do not either. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep lines of communication open with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late into the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to seize the support available. You can never have too much of it!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety about university are frequently baseless and can be soothed through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and have found ways to enjoy myself despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
