Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period rich in personal growth, obstacles, and countless enjoyable moments! But what insights has this year brought me, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undeniably one of the more frightening components of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it might rank among your top worries. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room due to my shyness about venturing out and greeting others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I glean from this experience? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to facilitate interaction with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your authentic self. With the variety of individuals across the program and campus, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap between the first and second terms. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in coping with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you find something puzzling, I can nearly assure you there are many others who feel similarly. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and keep in regular contact with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take a step at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to bond with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this segment of university life is to seize the support offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
Overall, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the diverse array of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst stressful elements such as exams and deadlines.
