Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Plunging into the unknown was not something my formerly bashful and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was making connections with others. This is often one of the most intimidating parts of entering university, and if you’re a future student, it may be one of your major concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and meet people. Nevertheless, sitting here now, I can confidently declare that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and activities to facilitate connections. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and campus, you’re certain to find kindred spirits.

Another challenge was the academic load and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a significant leap from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same struggle. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others also don’t understand it. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out to both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and keep us informed throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to become familiar with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this university aspect is to utilize the assistance that is being provided. You can never have too much help!

In general, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be eased by the variety of support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself while managing stresses such as exams and deadlines.
