Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and withdrawn self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of fun! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening elements of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to go outside and introduce myself to others. However, today I can firmly state that I’ve made some of the best pals I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I found that it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the outset of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There will be plenty of ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be your true self. With so many diverse individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to come across people like you.

Another obstacle was the demanding workload and difficult content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things helped me navigate through this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others also do not understand. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to get acquainted with staff, and it’s definitely one of the greatest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support that is available. You can never have too much!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
