By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was just about to embark on my degree journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the most daunting when commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, today I can assertively say that I have made some of the finest friends here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others facing similar experiences. What did I realize? It’s beneficial to take a dive at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if you can embody anything, be yourself. With such a diverse group of people in the course and at the university, you are sure to encounter individuals with similar mindsets.
Another hurdle was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even tougher shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re puzzled by something, chances are others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to grasp in the first year. Look for help from both peers and instructors!
This leads me to my succeeding point. The instructors in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges faced by students. They show understanding towards us and maintain ongoing dialogue regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Referencing the leaps I mentioned before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the help available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary and how to find joy despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
