By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back, I realize it has been a year rich with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This can be one of the most nerve-wracking elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be one of your largest concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Now, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? It’s beneficial to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, no need to fret! There will be ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, if you can embody one thing, be your authentic self. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; witnessing others study may leave you feeling insufficient. What helped me was the realization that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, others likely are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from fellow students and staff!
The lecturers in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties that students encounter. They empathize with us and consistently communicate about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I talked about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to make the most of the available support. You can never have enough!
This year has shown me that anxious feelings about university are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me I’m never truly alone and how to have fun despite the stress of exams and deadlines.
