Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This can often be one of the most daunting facets of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of course commencement, I isolated myself in my room throughout the day, too daunted to venture out and socialize. However, I can now proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I come to learn? I realized that making the leap at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that authenticity is vital. With the multitude of diverse individuals spread across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a competitive environment can impact your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What helped me was the realization that everyone experiences the same challenges. If there’s something you find perplexing, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty for support!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to build rapport with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway is to leverage the available support. You can never have an excess of assistance!
In conclusion, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
