Around ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the upcoming journey. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. In hindsight, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester kicking off, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all of which commenced with casual chats with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? It’s crucial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, if you can embody one quality, be genuine. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and the university, you are sure to encounter those similar to you.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a marked increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can take a toll on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me during this time, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you others are struggling as well. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your peers and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had embraced it earlier. I referred to taking risks previously – I did make one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build rapport with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the finest steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
In conclusion, this year has taught me that apprehensive feelings regarding university are often misplaced and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and revealed how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
