It was ten months ago, back in October 2022, that I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what was to come. I was poised to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown wasn’t quite the character of my previously timid and introverted self. Reflecting now, I realize an academic year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and ample enjoyment unfolded! So, what insights has this year provided me, and where do I stand today?

One of the initial and more anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university life, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it might be at the forefront of your concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent an entire day secluded in my room, deterred by the thought of venturing out to greet others. Yet here I am today, able to assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what valuable lesson did I glean? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite ready or feel hesitant, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I discovered that if there’s one thing to prioritize, it’s being yourself. With the diversity of individuals present in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I needed to overcome was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a definite escalation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a challenging environment can be detrimental to your confidence; observing others studying may lead you to feel inadequate. However, several factors helped me navigate that sensation, one of which was the reassurance that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can virtually guarantee that there are several others experiencing the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Seek help from both your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize the difficulties students face. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our challenges throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until near the end of the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking bold steps – I indeed took one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is an incredibly valuable experience. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to utilize the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

In a broader sense, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both in the lead-up to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated by the vast array of support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy myself amid the stressors of exams and deadlines.
