Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously shy and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current state?

One of the early and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This often ranks among the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day as I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Today, however, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.

Another challenge encountered was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for one’s confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several things aided me in coping with that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If there’s something you struggle to grasp, I can almost guarantee there are others who also share that confusion. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I should have done so earlier. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are abundant opportunities to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to seize the support that is available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are almost always baseless and can be mitigated with the myriad of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
