Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into uncharted territory wasn’t a scenario my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting aspects of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your top worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day locked in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, all beginning with light conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what was the takeaway? I learned that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is crucial. If you don’t feel ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your interaction with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it’s authenticity. With a diverse array of individuals within the program and across the university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors helped me navigate through that sensation, one of which was the acknowledgment that everyone faces similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are puzzled as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize the struggles students face. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took a leap at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the support being offered. You can never have an excess of it!

In a broader sense, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are generally unfounded and can be eased through the wide range of support resources available from both staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me how to relish the experience alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
