Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may rank among your top concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation a few days prior to the semester, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what is my takeaway? I learned that it’s always wise to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample opportunities and activities to help you bond with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a variety of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of coursework and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you struggle with a concept, I can almost assure you that others are having the same difficulty. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive, and they understand that students encounter challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support resources until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking risks earlier – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with staff, and doing so is unquestionably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

Ultimately, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
