Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and unsure about what lay ahead as I commenced my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back at the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was the quest for friendship. This is frequently a significant worry for new university students. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to engage with new people. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and within my course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with peers experiencing similar situations. The takeaway? It’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities available to assist you in connecting with others. Be authentic, and you’ll encounter individuals like yourself.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the content. There was a clear escalation from A-levels and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. This environment can test your confidence, but keep in mind, everyone is on the same journey. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This is vital in your first year—reach out for help from peers and faculty!

The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students endure. They keep us informed about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral care until later on, but I regret not doing it earlier. I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with the staff—an invaluable opportunity. There are various ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the finest actions you can take for your well-being. Take full advantage of the support available; you can never have too much!

This year has taught me that apprehensive feelings regarding university are often misplaced and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve come to realize I am never alone and how to find joy amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
