Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize it as a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most formidable challenges was forging friendships. This can undoubtedly be one of the more nerve-wracking elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as an aspiring student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before the semester started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assertively say that I have created some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it all began with striking up casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, worry not! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and occasions to help you bond with others. I also realized that if you can embody anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee that several others feel the same. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They truly want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are sympathetic to our struggles and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned bold steps earlier – at the start of the year, I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!

In broad terms, this year has revealed to me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated through the vast array of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and has illustrated how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
