Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into uncharted territory was not something my previously introverted and reserved self had ever embraced. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too nervous to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve built some of the strongest friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated from casual conversations with others facing similar experiences. So, what did I realize? It’s wise to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t stress! There are numerous icebreaker activities designed to help you engage with others. Additionally, if you can embody one principle, let it be to be authentic. With the vast diversity among classmates and at the university, you’re sure to encounter kindred souls.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even more considerable jump from the first to second term. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-assurance; witnessing others study may leave you feeling inadequate. What helped me was the realization that everyone shares this experience. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can almost promise that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize and ensure ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to bond with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make good use of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never alone and taught me how to find joy amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
