Around ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting on the journey, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of entering university, and for any prospective students reading this, it may be one of your major concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively state that I have formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking chances and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s to be authentic. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find like-minded people.

Another challenge was the workload and the level of difficulty of the content. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Seek support from your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance that’s available. You can never have too much support!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated with the plethora of support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
