Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something that my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I realize this past year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university is often one of the most daunting, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be a significant worry for you. On the initial day of moving into my living quarters, just days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone else. Now, I can assuredly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I gleaned? I’ve learned that it’s advantageous to take a bold step at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel quite prepared or comfortable, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous ice-breaking activities and occasions will be available to aid you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and campus, you’re sure to encounter those who connect with you.
Another challenge was coping with the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undeniably a significant jump from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper incline from the first to the second term. Being placed in such a setting can test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me contend with that sentiment, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you find something challenging, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep an open line of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the opportunities for help offered. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and throughout university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the numerous support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment regardless of stressors like examinations and deadlines.
