Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into such an experience wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it has been a time full of personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyable moments! But what lessons have I learned this year, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most daunting challenges was establishing friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating facets of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day of moving into my dorm, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room because I was too fearful to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I have ever experienced, right here at this institution and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversation with people in similar situations. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you find yourself not feeling quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout your program and the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some instances, an even bigger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things helped me navigate this feeling, one being the awareness that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re confused about a topic, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who are equally puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to acquire during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and from faculty!
This leads me to my next note. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face challenges. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take a step at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which proves to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s truly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to take full advantage of the resources offered to you. You can never have too much support!
Overall, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated through the numerous support avenues available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
