Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was ready for. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may raise concerns for you as well. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, far too scared to venture out and meet others. However, I can now proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events and gatherings will assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With the diverse range of individuals present in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a scenario can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel ill-equipped. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly guarantee that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to internalize during your first year. Reach out to your peers and faculty for support!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students may encounter difficulties. They empathize with our struggles and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. While I didn’t fully take advantage of the support system until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I did so at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it truly is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the diverse support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy amidst the pressures of examinations and deadlines.
